October 9 - Back From The Cape
I'm back! From the Cape! 'Twas wonderful as it always is. However I have a tale to tell...
We began going on whale watches three years ago. My first whale watch I was fine, didn't get sick. My second whale watch I was fine...didn't get sick. This year however.....
We made reservations as we always do. We got in line early as we always do because I love to ride right up front on the bow. Always do. This year the swells were eight to ten feet, the sea was choppy. The ride out to the Stellwagen Bank was AWESOME! The bigger the wave, the more I liked it. Wheeee what a ride.
Until the whales were spotted and the captain cut the engines....oh I was okay for a few minutes....the up and down and side to side rolling on those waves didn't bother me as I shot pictures with my long lens. But then...oh.my.God.
Oh the nausea rolled upon me and crashed like one of those giant ten foot waves. I stumbled to the back of the boat..you know...where they keep the sick people....the bathroom was busy...(with a sick person...) so I hurled into a garbage can. And that wasn't the worst part....
I hurled all over my camera.
So I found a seat and tucked my head under my arm...like a bird does. I tried to lift my head...but....the Atlantic was spinning all around me.
Now I would rather die than puke, and I had that...that...taste in my mouth....
I knew I passed by hubby standing somewhere around mid-ship, so I stumbled back to find him and yell “I got sick and I need some gum or something”. And anyway...I wanted my daddy. (Hubby had been busy leading old ladies to the bathroom 'cause they didn't have thier sea legs. I had my sea legs, but my stomach was somehow attached to those huge rolling swells out on the ocean...)
Whilst I was sitting there motionless the baby whale got very curious and came right up to the boat...the back of the boat...mere feet from where I sat.
I opened one eye and peered out. Pictures..I thought..oh my God pictures! As I opened the second eye and tried to lift my head I thought “fuck the whales, fuck the photographs, I'm gonna die sitting right here”.
Next time, I will ask what the seas are like and if they are eight to ten feet I will not be going. If they are four or so feet I know I will be fine. If they are six feet, I might go and try some Dramamine....but if they are a rough like this time...nope.
And I am sooooooooooo pissed because I didn't get very many photos of the whales this time, and a puked on camera to top it all off.
